Queens Award

    The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of the Queen’s coronation. It is the MBE for volunteer groups.

    One-to-One is based at Community House in Edmonton. They aim for people with leaning difficulties to have better lives, speaking out about and taking part in all aspects of community life in Enfield.

    One-to-One has been running for 24 years initially it was part of a larger national organisation, but in 1997 Lesley Walls, the Chief Executive, supported local people with learning difficulties and volunteers to break away to form the locally run, user led charity that it is today.

    There are over 500 members who directly or indirectly benefit from their work. They are supported to gain skills and self-confidence, get out and about and speak up about local issues members are directly involved in making decisions and leading the organisation forward, they develop leadership skills and become empowered.

    There are currently over 80 volunteers many of these are people with learning difficulties who supporting their peers to get out and about in the community.

    Vice-Chairman, Paul Lehrian and Chief Executive, Lesley Walls attended a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace as part of the recognition for winning the Award.

    One-to-One will also receive

    • Permission to use the official Queens Award for Voluntary Service Logo
    • A signed certificate from Her Majesty The Queen and an English Crystal with the logo insignia   (presented locally by the Lord Lieutenant for Enfield)
